Scleral Lenses vs. Standard Contacts for Keratoconus & Hard-to-Fit Eyes in Vista

For many people, standard contact lenses provide clear, comfortable vision. But when the cornea has an irregular shape or an eye condition such as keratoconus is present, traditional contacts may not provide the stability, comfort, or clarity you need. At Shadowridge Family Vision Center, we offer scleral lenses in Vista for patients who need a more specialized approach to contact lens wear.

Why Keratoconus Can Make Standard Contacts Difficult

Keratoconus causes the cornea to gradually thin and develop a cone-like shape. Because the front surface of the eye becomes irregular, light may not focus properly on the retina. This can result in blurred or distorted vision that glasses and standard soft contact lenses may not fully correct.

Patients with irregular corneas may also experience frequent prescription changes, glare, light sensitivity, or difficulty getting conventional contacts to remain stable on the eye. When standard contacts are not providing dependable vision, specialty contact lenses may offer another option.

How Scleral Lenses Are Different

Unlike standard contact lenses that rest directly on the cornea, scleral lenses are larger and designed to vault over the corneal surface. They rest on the sclera, or white part of the eye, creating a smooth optical surface over an irregular cornea.

The space between the scleral lens and the cornea is filled with preservative-free saline before the lens is inserted. This fluid reservoir can help maintain moisture while the lens is worn, which may also make scleral lenses useful for certain patients with dry or sensitive eyes.

Potential advantages of scleral lenses include:

•          More stable vision for irregular corneas

•          Improved comfort for some hard-to-fit eyes

•          A fluid reservoir between the lens and cornea

•          Reduced movement compared with many standard contacts

•          Customized fitting based on the individual shape of the eye

Scleral Lenses vs. Standard Contacts

Standard soft contact lenses are designed to conform closely to the cornea. For patients with relatively regular corneal shapes, they can offer excellent comfort and convenient vision correction.

For keratoconus and other irregular corneal conditions, however, following the uneven corneal surface can limit how well a standard lens corrects vision. Scleral lenses instead create a new, smooth refractive surface over the cornea, which can provide clearer and more consistent vision for some patients.

That does not mean every hard-to-fit contact lens patient automatically needs scleral lenses. The right choice depends on your corneal shape, prescription, eye health, tear film, comfort, and visual needs.

Getting Fitted for Scleral Lenses in Vista

Scleral lenses require a more individualized fitting process than conventional contacts. We evaluate your eye health and corneal shape, take detailed measurements, and assess how the lens sits on the eye. Follow-up visits are also important so we can evaluate vision, comfort, and overall lens performance.

If standard contacts have been uncomfortable or your vision remains distorted because of keratoconus or an irregular cornea, a specialty contact lens evaluation at Shadowridge Family Vision Center can help determine whether scleral lenses are appropriate for you.
